But there is a second tier of voters who are becoming non-plussed with Obama. Those of us who saw our hopes disappear, decent people like Kucinich and Richardson go by the wayside and presented with the choice of Obama or Hillary Rodham Clinton, we did the best with what we had. The choice between Obama and his saber rattling about going into Pakistan's tribal areas, or Hillary Rodham Clinton's promise to 'totally obliterate' the 66 million people living in Iran, should Iran attack Israel. There was a moment of mental compromise, Obama is smart, he is just doing a bit of theater to expand his base, but we know he will not stray too far from his core principals.
Then came his FISA vote. The feelings of betrayal started, the feeling that we really don't know this man and that we can't really count on him to do the ethical thing. Then the sucking up to religious fundamentalists, faith based initiatives, Israeli special interest groups, and an apparent disregard for the rights of Palestinians akin to the policies of John Kerry and Howard Dean.
Any euphoria over Obama is dissipated. The feeling of another John Kerry type choice, or perhaps one even less appealing, is taking over.
Maybe we will vote for him, reluctantly, because the prospect of a McCain presidency is too dreadful, but if Obama is really tanking and has no chance to win, why not make that protest vote for the Green party or some other voice crying in the wilderness.
Any attempt to discuss his mistakes on the official blogs is met by condescending shrill accusations of "troll" by the True Believers. If you are not capable of spinning the FISA vote in your own head and believing it is somehow the "right thing", there is ostracism.
Don't blame Obama's failure and our lack of confidence on racism. He stuck a needle in our eye, and those who were the most likely to come out fighting for him are now sitting this one out on the sidelines.
Gore, Kerry, Obama, deja vu. The thrill is gone.
